A Boy and His Gift

At a very young age, the boy was given a very special gift.  It was very fragile, so he knew he needed to be careful with it.  He kept it on a special shelf, waiting for the perfect tie to share it with someone.

And the boy loved his gift.

When he got a little older he had more opportunity to share his gift. He met someone who he knew would appreciate it.  One day, which he decided was right, he took his gift off the shelf and shared it with his new friend.  His new friend laughed at his special gift.  “Boys shouldn’t have that silly gift.”  Both his new friend, and his new friend’s friends laughed at his special gift.  So the boy ran back home and put the gift back on the shelf and covered it with a blanket.  “No one should see this but me, unless they are special,” he thought.

And the boy loved his gift a little less. When he got a little older he had more opportunity to share his gift.  He met someone special who he knew would appreciate it.  One day, which he decided was right, he took his new special friend to share his gift with.  “Why is it covered in a blanket?” he was asked.  “Because I didn’t want anyone to see it,” he answered, “I’ll show you, but you can’t laugh.”  His special friend agreed so the boy removed the blanket.  “It’s beautiful, may I hold it?” his special friend asked.  “Yes,” the boy answered.  As the special friend reached out to grab the gift it fell to the floor and cracked.  Seeing it broken now, the special friend said it was ugly and didn’t want to see it anymore.  The boy was sad that it was broken and put it in a case so no one could touch it and break it more.  “No one should hold this but me, unless they are very special,” he thought.

And the boy loved his gift a little less.

When he got a little older he had more opportunity to share his gift.  He met someone very special who he knew would appreciate it.  One day, which he decided was right, he took his new very special friend to share his gift with.  “Why is it in this case?” he was asked.  “Because it was dropped and is now broken and not as beautiful,” he answered.  “Just because it is broken, does not mean it isn’t beautiful.  I think it’s absolutely beautiful and perfect the way it is.  Can I see it? I might be able to fix it?” his special friend asked.  “Yes,” the boy answered.  His very special friend took the gift from the case and began to fix it. The gift was carefully placed on the floor.  “I’ll be right back,” said the very special friend.  So the boy waited with his gift on the floor.  He waited and waited but his very special friend never came back.  Alone and broken, he put his very special gift back in the case and covered the case with a blanket.  “No one should know this is here but me, not even if they are very, very special,” he thought.

And the boy loved his gift a little less.

When he got a little older he had more opportunity to share his gift.  He met many people who he knew would appreciate it.  But because it was alone and broken, he never shared it with any of them.

And the boy loved his gift a little less.
